Suggestions for Survival

Everything will be fine.  This is not the end of the world.  You will survive, I promise.

You may want to try to adopt the following:

  • If you haven’t already got one, develop a really good sense of humor.  (It’s easier than crying).

  • Be consistent with your affection.  Remember, your child cannot help it.  Always let your child know that no matter how upset or angry you may get, you will always love and protect them.

  • Be consistent with whatever form of treatment you decide upon.  Whether it is medication, behavior modification, or alternative therapy, make sure you do the same thing, the same way, every time.  If there has to be a change, MAKE SURE YOU TELL YOUR CHILD WELL IN ADVANCE.

  • Hugs work wonders.  When you’ve just about had enough, round up your out-of-control child and just give them a great big hug.  Often times this helps to calm both of you.

  • Your child is just that, a child.  They do not always understand why they do the things they do.  Help them out, explain things.  They will comprehend if you use terms they can understand.

  • This is a challenging situation for both you and your child.
