Management of AD/HD

Cure?  To date, there is no cure for AD/HDOften hyperactivity decreases or disappears during adolescence, and just as often does not.  Inattention can be a life-long problem.

Treatment

There are several treatment plans the doctors usually recommend.  Each is tailored to a child’s specific needs.  Some basic ones are listed here.

Medication – there are several stimulant and non-stimulant medications available.  Stimulant medications have been used for childhood behavioral disorders since the 1930’s.

Behavior Modification -  the main behavioral approach is behavioral training for parents and teachers providing strategies for management.

Multimodal – this includes both medication and behavioral modification.  A major research study by the National Institutes of Health found that medication alone produced the highest level of  positive results in control AD/HD behaviors.  Medication with behavioral modification produced the best long-term results.
