Causes of AD/HD

  • The exact cause of AD/HD is still unknown.

  • Neurotransmitter deficits, genetics, and perinatal complications have been linked to the disorder.

  • The fact that AD/HD runs in families, suggests that inheritance is an important risk factor.  Hereditary depression has also be linked to this disorder.

  • Non-genetic factors can also play an important role.  Some investigators suggest that exposure to toxins, complications of pregnancy or delivery could have an effect.

  • Even with all the investigations and studies, researchers still cannot say with certainty what causes AD/HD.
