It is extremely
important to identify, diagnose, and treat AD/HD as soon as possible.
Although individuals
with this disorder can be very successful in life, without identification
and proper treatment, AD/HD may have serious consequences, including school
failure, depression, problems with relationships, conduct disorder,
substance abuse, and job failure.
My 16 year old son was
diagnosed with AD/HD when he was 4. He has been on stimulant medication
since diagnosis. He is bright, creative, sensitive, and does very well in
school. It has taken a lot of patience, love, sympathy, and energy to meet
this challenge, but it has been well worth the effort.
One side-effect of AD/HD is that often
the children are exceptionally bright, creative, and may possess an amazing
ability or passion in one or several areas such as: math, art, music, or
writing. Feed these children’s minds. Give them every opportunity to
excel. You don’t have to be rich to do this; there is always the public
library and the internet to explore.
